چکیده

It was investigated whether inhaled budesonide reduces lung volumes in a group of asthmatic children with lung hyperinflation. Budesonide (800 mg bid, for 2 months) was administered to 12 asthmatic children (mean age, 11.293.3 years) with lung hyperinflation (TGV]130% predicted and/or RV]140% predicted) in a randomised, placebo controlled, double blind, crossover study. Body plethysmography (panting frequency controlled at 1·s) was performed at the beginning, 2 months afterwards (before crossover) and at the end of the study. Budesonide significantly reduced TGV (2.3590.90 l BTPS or 126924% predicted) compared with placebo (2.5491.08 l BTPS, P=0.014 or 140921% predicted, PB0.05). In addition, budesonide significantly increased mean specific conductance (0.0690.02 cm H2O l s to 0.0790.01 cm H2O l s, PB0.05). It was concluded that budesonide reduced lung hyperinflation most likely by decreasing airway inflammation. © 1999 Elsevier Science Ireland Ltd. All rights reserved.

Daily versus as-needed inhaled corticosteroid for mild persistent asthma (The Helsinki early intervention childhood asthma study)

OBJECTIVE To compare the effect of inhaled budesonide given daily or as-needed on mild persistent childhood asthma. Patients, design and INTERVENTIONS 176 children aged 5-10 years with newly detected asthma were randomly assigned to three treatment groups: (1) continuous budesonide (400 microg twice daily for 1 month, 200 microg twice daily for months 2-6, 100 microg twice daily for months 7-...

Effect of budesonide on pulmonary hyperinflation in young asthmatic children.

In 19 asthmatic children, aged 2-6 years, the effect of six weeks' treatment with inhaled budesonide or placebo on functional residual capacity (FRC--helium dilution) and bronchodilator responsiveness was assessed in a double blind, randomised crossover trial. FRC was increased in most children at the start of treatment. Treatment with budesonide was associated with a reduction in FRC by compar...

Treatment of severe steroid dependent preschool asthma with nebulised budesonide suspension.

The steroid sparing effect of nebulised budesonide suspension was assessed in a double blind placebo controlled parallel group study of 36 preschool children with severe asthma who were dependent on treatment with oral steroids. Nebulised budesonide suspension significantly reduced the requirement for treatment with oral steroids, and produced a marked improvement in overall health as scored on...

Effect of different antiasthmatic treatments on exercise-induced bronchoconstriction in children with asthma.

BACKGROUND Exercise-induced bronchoconstriction occurs in a large proportion of children with asthma, limiting everyday activities important for their physical and social development. OBJECTIVE The purpose of this randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled study was to compare the ability of different patterns of antiasthmatic treatment, recommended in childhood asthma, to protect patients ...

A 24 year old woman admitted to the critical care unit, with 'resistant' asthma and a metabolic acidosis.

CASE REPORT A 24 year old woman was admitted to the critical care unit with a ‘resistant’ asthma attack. She had a past history of mild asthma since childhood which was exacerbated by upper respiratory tract infections, exercise and red wine. She had been admitted to hospital for severe asthma attacks on four previous occasions although for the last two years she had been well controlled on bud...
